First Look: Dark Cloud

One part action-RPG and one part world-building sim, Dark Cloud is looking to give Link a run for his rupees. Check out these screens from the Japanese version!

What you see isn?t always what you get ? just check out Dark Cloud for the PS2 if you?re looking for proof. Beneath the deceptively cartoonish exterior, there lies a complicated little game - one part action-RPG, and one part world-building sim. The story? After a hideous genie-demon wipes out your home village and leaves you unconscious, you embark on a quest through dungeons, forests, and all sorts of other fantastic landscapes to track down the mysterious purveyor of death and rebuild your home from the ground up? literally. Sony has dubbed Dark Cloud a ?GeoRama RPG,? which means that aside from all the sword-wieldin? Zelda 64-style adventuring, there?s the added hook of being able to mold the world you live in, a la the recent Legend of Mana for the PlayStation. We?ve still got to wait patiently for the dark rain to fall on American shores (hopefully sometime in 2001), but for now, check out these screens from the Japanese version of the game.
