Review: Heavy Metal: GeoMatrix

Capcom takes another shot at the first person shooter genre and fares much better. Find out by how much in the review.

Loosely based off the comic anthology, Heavy Metal: Geomatrix combines first person deathmatch with a dash of fisticuffs for a rockin good time.

The world of Heavy Metal Geomatrix takes place in a future where nanobot technology has made possible the recreation of human cells in the virtual world thus rendering it into a seamless, hyper reality. With the world land masses disappearing due to extreme global warming, battles are fought in the Geomatrix over the few remaining bits of earth.

Capcom?s previous first person shooter, Spawn: In the Demon?s hand, was an underachieving experiment in the genre that was heavy in style, but lacking in substance. Geomatrix follows in it?s predecessor?s footsteps, but goes several steps beyond with explosive lighting effects and greatly improved character models designed by the hard edged art style of Simon Bisley

The controls are closer to Capcom?s brawler Powerstone than to Spawn, which is a change for the better. Almost all weapons have auto-aim and hand-to-hand combat is actually effective resulting in well balanced match ups regardless of the characters selected Playing against a friend is great fun, but the lack of four player support limits the replay value.

Big name bands like Megadeth and Halford provide the music, but the overall selection is a bit slim and can be annoying if hard rock is not to your tastes. Heavy Metal: Geomatrix isn?t for everyone, but those looking for a shooter hybrid should find this a surprisingly solid and fun title.
