Review: Atari Anniversary Edition
All gamers deserve to appreciate the joys of classic arcade gaming, but limitations in these conversions deter from a true arcade experience.
Infogrames delivers a slick dozen of the greatest arcade games ever on the Dreamcast including groundbreakers such as Missile Command, Tempest, and the grand-daddy of them all, Pong. The Dreamcast's analog controller just can't mimick the subtle nuances and control of original trackball games such as Centipede and Crystal Castle, or the simple twist knob in Tempest and Super Breakout. In keeping the graphics authentic, the developers had to sacrifice size in order to fit the vertical arcade screen ratio onto a horizontal TV screen, and it just doesn't work with the teeny graphics of Asteroids or if you play on a small TV.
All games are playable, but fun factor is dictated by the design limitations. The abundance of background information is a game geek's holy grail, and veteran gamers will thrill to the authentic arcade sounds of yesteryear once again. Atari Anniversary Edition is for these diehards exclusively.
