Publishers believed that RPGs were a small, niche market, unable to generate revenues from the broader computer gaming community. Baldur's Gate finally broke this shibboleth last year. It showed that RPGs could augment their appeal, expanding beyond that relatively small core audience, with a fresh approach.

- It used to be so simple. Multiplay in first-person shooters (FPS) was pure twitch. Kill anything that moved. But even at the Dawn of Frag, there were hints of what was to come. Seeds were planted in Doom's cooperative play. When Deathmatch reached its height in Quake and Quake II, teamplay really began to blossom. And, these days, it isn't enough for an FPS to ship with multiplayer capability.

- Cavedog Entertainment, one of the many companies that will be showing products at E3, is a young'un in the game business. Founded in 1995, its main title, Total Annihilation, didn't appear until 1997. Notwithstanding the fact that they only have one franchise, Cavedog isn't exactly an upstart.
