Review: Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 sports the same exact content and gameplay features of the PlayStation 2 version. There's the huge roster of over 120 playable characters, an expanded Dragon Adventure story that recreates the complete Dragon Ball Z storyline, and the enhanced combat engine that's guaranteed to have you performing midair to ground juggles in seconds.

PROTIP: Spirit Bombs: hold both trigger buttons and raise both controllers above your head, then yank them down.

Although the content is the same, the game sports better graphics, not to mention the unique Wii controller that takes things to a whole new level. There's a new Pointer System that works like this: you lock-on to opponents by centering a targeting reticule near your target and pressing Up on the remote's directional pad. From there, you can unleash melee and ranged attacks with ease. Moving the reticule off screen enables you to execute a block.

The Nunchuk controller's analog stick is used primarily for character movement. Pressing C while moving enables you to fly and tilting the Nunchuk slightly on its vertical axis enables you to move up and down in flight. Forcefully titling the Nunchuk forward and backward enables you to dash, and initiating a dash while simultaneously holding C will enable you to initiate a homing dash.

PROTIP: Mastering the dual controllers will result in some pretty amazing mid-air to ground combos.

While the basic stuff is easy to pull of, the super moves require a fair bit of coordination. For example, to execute Goku's Kamehameha, you have to first lock-on to your target, simultaneously press and hold down both trigger buttons, pull both the Remote and Nunchuk controllers back away from the screen, and then forcefully push them out in front of you. While it's a lot of work, it certainly gives you the sense of actually pulling off the monster attack move.

That's What You Think, Captain Cocky!

Don't worry if you're skeptical of the Wii control scheme. The developers of Budokai Tenkaichi 2 have included the option for you to play the game with either the standard Wii or GameCube gamepad. So if the newfangled controller scheme isn't to your liking, you have the option to still enjoy some good-old-fashion DBZ violence the old-fashioned way.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 for the Wii is the apex of what a Dragon Ball Z fighter should be. The game provides an astonishing amount of playability, unique player interface, and covers nearly all of the 20 odd years of the Dragon Ball saga. The game is a definite buy for both Wii gamers and DBZ fans alike.
