Review: Medal of Honor: Vanguard
It's hard to give Medal of Honor: Vanguard a fair shake, simply because a pervasive sense of deja vu haunts this and every other WWII-era title.
Call of Duty. Medal of Honor. Honor of Duty. Duty of Medal--it's all the same! That developers have managed to keep things feeling even semi-fresh in between titles is a miracle, but it's starting to get to the point where, every time I boot up a WWII-era shooter, the old adage about squeezing blood from a stone comes to mind.
Wii Are Troubleshooting
I will say this for Vanguard, though: in terms of Wii FPS titles, it has the best controls I've ever seen. That's not saying much, considering the bar was set rather low by Call of Duty 3 and Red Steel, but Vanguard is an encouraging sign that developers are finally starting to work out the kinks and quirks of the Wii Remote. It's not perfect--sensitivity issues abound, arm fatigue is still an issue--but it feels much more streamlined and intuitive than past implementations.
Solid controls aside, this is still the same game you've been playing since the first Medal of Honor. It's a solid shooter with the standard cinematic presentation, but I'd probably be much more excited about it if the 800 other titles in this genre didn't exist. Developers, take note: find a different war to recreate or make one up, because if I have to pick up another M1 Garand, I'm going to go crazy.
