New Ways to Play - Attacks and Controls

The basics haven't changed: Multiple personalities inhabit sprawling 3D environments, and your goal's simply to beat the snot out of them before knocking adversaries off hovering platforms by any means possible (The more damage done, the farther victims fly when hit, so it pays to rack up the hurt...). Characters can shield, sidestep or roll to block and dodge, recover from certain defeat by leaping to safety in mid-air or take the fight to opponents with grabs, throws and combo moves.

Support for walking, running, hopping and double jumping adds depth too, but what you'll really love are options for increasingly powerful standard, strong and smash attacks. Four types of special strikes - up, down, standard and side... try them all to discover cool, unexpected techniques - are also available.

However, multiple control methods are now supported: Think GameCube controllers, Classic controllers, the Wii Remote (held sideways) or Wii Remote and Nunchuk combo. Button-mashing also produces better results in terms of quick and sustained strikes, undoubtedly a side-effect of the need to offer a consistent experience across multiple user interfaces (Note that custom button configurations can be saved for all, and you can also hold buttons down to execute chained strings of attacks.).

Expect several fresh gameplay twists as well, i.e. gliding, which winged fighters like Pit, Meta Knight and Pokemon staple Charizard can access by holding the jump button in mid-air. Also original to the game are Footstool Jumps, letting you bounce off enemies' heads and execute Meteor Smashes.

Moving and bounding while firing weapons like the Super Scope is suddenly possible too, as is using lasso-type items such as Samus' Plasma Whip to rescue tumbling heroes. Collect Smash Ball goodies, and you can execute ultra-powerful Final Smashes to boot, which devastate opponents in accordingly over-the-top fashion.
