The Usual Suspects - Playable Characters

A pleasing 25 playable Nintendo mascots were available in the last series installment. Super Smash Bros. Brawl wisely looks set to raise this figure, with nearly two dozen total returning favorites and butt-whuppin' newcomers already announced.

Repeat performers, some having made franchise cameos as far back as on the Nintendo 64, include Mario, Link, Kirby, Pikachu, Fox, Samus, Zelda, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Peach and the Ice Climbers. Special abilities are unique to each individual, but remain in keeping with either token attributes (e.g. the Ice Climbers' ability to freeze foes or execute hammer-waving assaults) or thinly-veiled brand marketing references (Donkey Kong's bongo attack).

Fresh to the series are a dozen-odd neophytes, though, including Wario, Zero Suit Samus, Fire Emblem swordsman Ike, a Pokemon trainer (not Ash), Diddy Kong, Mother 3's Lucas and Kirby's enigmatic adversary Meta Knight. Stranger additions run the gamut from Metal Gear Solid's rocket launcher-carrying Solid Snake (the young version) to Sonic the Hedgehog and mallet-wielding Kirby nemesis King Dedede.

Perhaps the most anticipated addition? Bow- and dual blade-waving Kid Icarus star Pit, who'll appear in cutscenes and battles alike... his first headlining appearance since 1991's Of Myths and Monsters for Game Boy.
