Review: Starcraft 64
After countless delays, one of the best Real Time Strategy games of all time has finally made its debut on the Nintendo 64. Read on to find out if it was worth the wait.
Still Zergtastic
StarCraft is one of those games that is already a classic although it's barely over 2 years old. The game offers you a choice of three different alien races and follows each with a storyline that unfolds as you progress through the game. What gives the game such an edge is the wide variety of units and great, intense battle scenarios. The Nintendo 64 version also packs in the Brood War expansion pack, which adds three new campaigns and a host of new weapons and worlds.
PC to console
Well, the big question is, did the conversion from PC to the N64 hurt StarCraft in any way? The answer is a big "of course, dummy". Although the game supports the 4MB Expansion Pak, the graphics just look muddy, making individual units hard to identify. Otherwise, the controls are actually not that bad, and you'll find yourself getting into them relatively quickly. Surprisingly, the sound is very good, with sharp voices and impressive music. If you have a PC or have played the original already, there is really no reason to bother with this one. For everyone else, StarCraft 64 is a fantastic title that suffers graphically on the console, but still retains everything else that made it so special.
