Review: Madden NFL 2002
Another year, another Madden?and this year is the swan song for the N64 version.
As the N64 prepares for its voyage to the back of gamers' closets and the GameCube and Xbox get ready to move everyone into the ?next-generation,? Madden makes its final appearance on the 64-bit system. Unfortunately, the game shows not only its age, but also the console?s age and its considerable weaknesses.
But Madden is always a tough competitor, and the 2002 version has all of the robust features you?ve come to expect?exhibition, season, franchise, and Madden challenge, as well as Classic mode, Coach?s Corner, Defensive mode, and head-to-head Two-Minute drill action. Graphically, the textures look good, but the player models are too fat, too blocky, and their animations are way too choppy. Plus, the commentary is repetitive.
After last year?s impressive debut for Madden on the PS2 and the lack of any must-have additions to the 2002 version, you?d be much better served saving the money you would have spent on this cart and putting it toward a new system to play a truly new game of Madden.
