Strategy Guide: Super Smash Brothers Melee (Defensive Move)

Defensive Moves
You know you're a beginner if all you do is run away. Learning triple jumps, shields, and rolling are steps in the right direction. But you'll never be a true Smash champion until you master the art of the Dodge.

Triple Jumps
Learning how to saving yourself from death is just as important as taking out other players-so you'd better learn how to triple jump first.

Note: Ness and Yoshi cannot perform triple jumps.

Jump once by tapping X, Y, or up on the control stick, then jump again at the peak for a second leap. Then hold up and press B to perform a special move that hurls you further into the air.

Shield
Stand still and hold the DEF button (L or R), but pay attention- after four seconds (or multiple hits) the shield will shatter, leaving you dazed and vulnerable. Repeatedly tap A or wiggle the control stick to snap out of it.

Roll
Put up a shield, then press left or right to roll roughly three character-lengths.

Ground Dodge
Tap (down DEF) while you're on the ground to do a quick sidestep, making you essentially invincible for a split second. This technique is invaluable because of its speed and its ability to set you up for easy counters. Master it!

Mid-Air Dodge
Tap (AD DEF) while in mid-air, and you'll quickly slide out of harm's way, and be invulnerable for a half second. A few characters (Ness and Yoshi) can use this as a substitute for a triple jump.
