First Look: E3 2003: Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

A twisted hybrid of Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2 on your GameCube, enveloped in Eternal Darkness.

Oh, those wily kids at Konami. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is being described as a mere GameCube-exclusive remake of a PlayStation classic, combining ?the story Metal Gear Solid with the gameplay and graphics of Metal Gear Solid 2??but if you know Hideo Kojima, you also know there?s probably got to be more to it than that. What?s more, The Twin Snakes is being developed by Silicon Knights, whose last game (Eternal Darkness) pretty much rewrote the rules for screwing with peoples? heads.

As you can see in the screen shots, The Twin Snakes adds a lot of gameplay elements to the original MGS that weren?t there before, including first-person aiming and shooting, ledge hanging, and using lockers to stow fallen foes. The game also features new CG movies directed by Japanese filmmaker Ryuhei Kitamura, as well as redone voiceovers by David Hayter (Snake?s voice in MGS2, and, incidentally, the writer of both X-Men movies?at least in theory).

For those who have never played the original Metal Gear Solid, the story involved now-legendary gruff superspy Solid Snake?s incursion into an Alaskan nuclear missile facility where a small terrorist group called FOXHOUND had taken control. While this new game?s tale is ostensibly the same, the real story behind Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes won?t be known until November, when the game comes out??til then, speculate away.
