First Look: Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II

As if the promise of Luigi and Samus weren?t enough to get you drooling, LucasArts is bringing Rogue Squadron?s sequel to the GameCube. Ah yes, the force is strong with this one.

Who gives a crap about Anakin?s skyrocketing midichlorian count, how Amidala gets her groove back, or whether Jar Jar has the gungas to become a Jedi?this is the only Star Wars sequel you need to be concerned about. Rogue Leader for the GameCube (the official follow-up to the N64 classic Rogue Squadron, as opposed to the spiritual follow-up, Battle for Naboo) begins with the legendary Death Star battle from Episode IV and follows what happened to the Rebellion during the evacuation of Yavin and the subsequent relocation to Hoth. Throughout the game?s 11 levels, you?ll pilot an X-wing, A-wing, B-wing, and plenty of other ships in locales ranging from a now-abandoned pod-racing track to Jabba the Hutt's palace. And, of course, the game will have enough unlockable bonus missions and hidden ships to satisfy even the most jaded nerf herder.

The preview version at E3 was nothing short of totally friggin? wizard. The scale of the battle above the Death Star was breathtaking, and the level of detail on the trench walls looked movie-perfect. Even more impressive was the Cloud City level?you fly miles above the skyline and can still make out every detail of the cityscape. All the playability seems to have made the leap to the GameCube intact, too, with a few new nifty touches made possible by the controller?s unique analog shoulder buttons. Come November, forget Vader, boy?this is your father.
