Feature: Sonic Timeline
Here's a look at Sonic's past adventures and various spin-offs.
Sonic the Hedgehog
(Genesis, Game Gear)
June 23, 1991 (Genesis)
The chubby Italian in red had something to worry about once Sega's blue ambassador of speed spun onto the platforming scene. Sonic's debut triggered an avalanche of Genesis consoles from store shelves, with its heart attack activating velocity and fantastic graphics.
Sonic the Hedgehog
(Geneses, Game Gear)
November 24, 1992 (Genesis)
"Sonic 2sday" was the name given to the day Sonic returned to burst those blisters he left on your thumbs during his first adventure. Along with introducing us to Sonic's sidekick Tails, S2 had 3D half pipe bonus stages, the super spin dash move, and Super Sonic.
Sonic Spinball
(Genesis, Game Gear)
November 15, 1993 (Genesis)
Prior to Spinball's release, Sonic games have been in essence oversized pinball machines turned sideways, so it's only natural that the spiky-haired speed demon would star in his own pinball game.
Sonic the Hedgehog Chaos
(Game Gear)
November 23, 1993
The first Game Gear exclusive Sonic game tightened up the controls of earlier titles and offered gamers more detailed levels to sprint through.
Sonic CD
(Sega CD)
November 19, 1993
The game was just a puffed up version of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, with a few extras like the F-Zeroesqu? secret levels and the new time zone system, where each level had a past, present, and future version.
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
(Genesis)
November 29, 1993
While not a Sonic game per se, seeing as the hedgehog is completely absent, the Mean Bean Machine was an easily forgotten Dr. Mario clone.
Segasonic the Hedgehog
(Arcade)
1993
A Sonic arcade game, you used a trackball to guide Sonic and his friends through several frenzied levels via a third-person isometric view (the faster you spun the ball, the faster your character would move). Segasonic was released in beta version in the U.S. in limited quantities.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
(Genesis)
January 24, 1994
Along with having a new save feature, Sonic Team's third spawn supplied gamers with superior graphics and enlarged stages.
