Catch a baseball. Kill Motherbrain. Suck up snot. Cut bamboo. Dodge arrows. Race in F-Zero. Balance a stack of books on a unicycle. Can you keep up? Nintendo?s betting that if you can?t, you will be able to soon?and you?ll like it.
First off, you should know that Wario Ware Inc: Mega Microgame$ (that?s the American name?it?s called Made in Wario in Japan) defies all classic Nintendo rules. Instead of playing an engaging game with intuitive control, players are forced to adapt to a series of simple games each with unique controls?with the barest minimum of instructions. The most important thing to understand about Made in Wario is that quickly adapting to each game is the very game itself.
Nintendo has created this new genre by hurling game after game at the player with little breathing room. Each game lasts for no more than five seconds and they keep on coming until you can no longer keep up. Considering that it takes about a good half-second for your brain to recognize what you?re looking at, there?s very little time to react. In fact, Nintendo has created a game with such focused, intense action that you?ll be left clawing at your medicine cabinet for more precious Ritalin.
Aside from the games that borrow segments from classic NES titles, many of Made in Wario?s games are quite crude looking. Simple stick figures on black backgrounds make up the majority of the games, but it doesn?t matter. Wario Ware isn?t about the graphics or the sound or the hilarious mini-games?it?s about reacting to all those elements being thrown at your face at a hundred miles per hour.
Nintendo has stepped outside of their normal guidelines to create Wario Ware, and they appear to be stepping in the right direction. If and when you purchase Wario Ware when it comes out this May, please don?t approach it as a classic Nintendo game. Instead, try to adapt.
