New Super Mario Bros. - Page 2

Fire Flower Frenzy

Like most other Super Mario games, New Mario has 8 worlds, each of them set in a distinct type of environment. Of course, there are desert, underwater, and castle stages, but you won't come anything that feels overdone from previous Mario games. There are a ton of enemies, new and old, and understandably enough, shooting a cluster of fireballs is usually your best offense.

Taking into consideration what Miyamoto has set out to accomplish with New Mario, it is all done very well, and the overall game is easily the most fun Mario experiences out there.

But at times it is just a bit too easy.

Fire Flowers are spread out in droves, 1UP mushrooms are plentiful, and Bowser boss battles are a walk in the park -- I completed most of them on the first try. That said, the difficult part of Mario comes not with handling the enemies, but with discovering the worlds that are peppered with secret paths and alternate routes; the way the game intertwines with itself is, by far, the most impressive part.

There's no reason to go in-depth about the dual screen features because they don't really add or subtract from the game experience. Yeah, having items accessible from the touchscreen is nice, but definitely not a necessity.

Like Mario 64 DS, there is a collection of mini-games outside of the single-player adventure. All of the original Mario 64 DS mini-games have been included, and others that involve concentration, cards, and/or memorization have been added. And, there is a Wi-Fi multiplayer mode that pins Mario and Luigi against each other in a Mario 64-like star collection challenge that takes places in shortened, single-player 2D levels.

While I still hold Super Mario World as the best 2D Mario game, with Super Mario Bros. 3 as the runner up, New Super Mario hits a close third. But it does have much more replay value than the other two, as you could easily play this one a few times though without the risk of it getting stale.

Although frustrating, it's still a hit. When you said the Super Mushroom made Mario 20 times his size to crush everything, you were wrong. The Mega Mushroom does that.
