Review: Tao's Adventure: Curse of the Demon Seal
The DS gets another touch-screen friendly RPG, but are the features worth a purchase?
A violent lightning storm has shattered the top of monster tower, a multileveled prison for beasts of all breeds, and now they are running wild. No warriors or spellers (Yeah, that's what wizards are called in this game) can take action because the entire town has been turned into stone statues. The fate of the human race rests in the hands of Tao, a young speller apprentice, and his "mutated teddy bear... helper Petcho.
Monster Rancher Tao's Adventure
Tao's Adventure has the nuts and bolts of most RPGs: the weapon shop, the inn, the village elder, the exhausted earth, wind, and fire magic, etc. One of the more innovative features of the game is the way in which magic spells are performed. Using the touchpad, you draw a symbol for each spell you want to execute. You can also play against your friends in a coliseum via wireless DS linking.
The Stereotypical RPG
If you have played any pre-Super Nintendo RPGs, you've played this game. The characters and enemies are uninspired; the dialogue is a little flat; and the twenty-leveled tower is agonizingly mind-numbing. The fact that this game is generic to the extreme may not matter to some gamers because of the scarcity of RPGs available on the DS. Tao is relatively simple for a role playing novice and the game is enjoyable for about two hours, but whether or not it's worth $30 depends on how selective you are when purchasing games.
