Kaio-ken Times Two-Hundred?
Supersonic Warriors 2 features a wide array of gaming modes, such as Story Mode, Versus Mode (via DS's Wireless Download and Play), Z Battle arcade mode, Practice Mode, and Maximum challenge modes. More importantly, DBZ fans can breathe a heavy sigh of relief; the Dragon Ball universe has been perfectly ported to the Nintendo handheld system. Each character has his signature abilities and moves translated intact. Goku, for instance, can pull off his patented Kamehameha wave, teleport himself out of danger, collect and throw Spirit Bombs, and Kaio-ken to more powerful levels.
You'll choose three characters in most modes: several major characters who will fight tag-team style, as well as an optional support character who can help out with a unique ability when called for. The gameplay has been subtly tweaked to incorporate the DS's touch screen, so during battles you can swap out characters or call on support by tapping the corresponding icons. This works fairly well, unless you're engaged in a ferocious battle and need to fumble for the touch screen in a hurry.
Choosing multiple characters gives you the ability to execute multi-character combo attacks, which deliver devastating damage to your opponents and look way cool, to boot. Imagine having Goku double fist Frieza to Piccolo, who kicks Frieza to Vegeta, who slams Frieze to the ground, where all three super projectile Frieza into oblivion. Not bad, huh?
Dun-Dun-Da-Da!
While the game faithfully translates Akira Toriyama's DBZ world onto the DS, the game stumbles in a few areas. Across the entire character roster, basic attacks from fighter to fighter are basically all the same. Meanwhile, the AI alternates between two wildly different moods--really dumb, or really cheap.
Even with these setbacks, Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2 is an excellent addition to the DS lineup, and the best DBZ game out on any handheld console to date. If you consider yourself a DBZ fan, well... you know what to do.
