Preview: Puchi Puchi Virus
Some people practically go through purgatory with all of the stress and studying they do to become a doctor. With schooling and internships, the process of becoming a M.D. can take over 10 years and cost tons of money. But playing as Dr. Kevin Longfellow in Puchi Puchi Virus, you'll only need about 10 minutes to master the medicine practice and you won't go crazy in the process.
The emphasis in Puchi Puchi Virus is on silly fun and doesn't try to take itself too seriously. Those looking for a medical drama where lives constantly hang in the balance and doctors spend as much time messing around with nurses as they do in the ER will be severely disappointed with Puchi Puchi. This game involving Dr. Longfellow and his assistants, Nurse Honeydew and George the Chicken (??), does have a storyline but one that exists purely for amusement. An entire town is suffering from the dreaded Puchirus that turns those affected into weird animals and the only thing that can stop it is Longfellow's Puchi Buster DS that emits a cure called "pure awesome" to destroy the virus. Sounds like a major crisis! Along the way, this medical team meets such characters as Kooh-ala-la, Uwe G.T. Bull, and the chicken martial artist Cluck Norris.
After diving into the wacky story, players should have an easy time picking up on the game. While some might think the style of this game would be similar to something like Dr. Mario, it's not. The basic method of play is using the stylus to touch three same-colored viruses which then forms a triangle. After this triangle is formed, a player can tap the viruses again to get rid of them and score points. However, you can form bigger triangles which scores you even more points and makes the levels easier to beat. But be careful of leaving viruses on the screen too long or not taking care of a selected virus as they will turn to stone and this isn't good for the patient. George the Chicken and Nurse Honeydew will make sure to warn you of this though by running around the top screen like mad when things are going bad.
Puchi features quite a few levels which should make for a lengthy game. For those playing this game in the single player mode, there are over 100 levels of play and that should keep anybody busy for a while. Each level involves ridding a certain patient of the Puchirus and you'll have to complete an objective in order to do so. Most require getting a specific number of points in a certain time limit but others will see a person doing things like having to get a distinct combo chain to advance to the next level, or patient.
What puzzle game would be complete without multiplayer and Puchi Puchi Virus definitely has this option. When working against the artificial intelligence to save patients just isn't going to cut it for you anymore, find a friend to take on. Puchi offers both single card and multicard options for multiplayer so that people who don't even own the game can simply download it to play against friends. In the multiplayer mode, competition is enhanced between two players as combo chains can send fire over to the other person's screen thus turning some of their viruses to stone. But things shouldn't get too heated between people playing this game as it is all about just having a good time.
