Review: Bliss Island
At first glance Bliss Island looks like a cute little game for a typical 7-year old. The newly released title for Xbox Live Arcade has cute little characters and uses a cute, simple control scheme. But once the game is fired up its cutesy appearance is no longer visible, in its place is a fun, addicting title offering plenty of challenge.
In Bliss Island gamers control Hoshi: a little blue critter that looks like a Koosh ball with a tail -- something you'd expect to see in a Saturday morning cartoon. Hoshi and his band of friends called Zwoophs shoot puffs of air from random...orifices. These air puffs can be used to push Hoshi or other objects. Players only use the left stick and the A button so the game is easy to pick up and play, but on higher levels the game requires a surprising amount of technique and strategy. While the game play is simple the steadily increasing difficulty creates greater challenges, making Bliss Island progressively addictive.
The game offers a lot of variety with 25 unique challenges across 9 different levels so there's always something different to do, and if you do get tired of playing by yourself you can play with friends online. The only thing Bliss Island is missing is a more complete multi-player experience. This game was meant to be played with four players instead of two, but considering how much fun you get for the price, you shouldn't be deterred from buying it.
Cons: Just a two player versus mode -- why not four?
