Superman Returns executive producer Chris Hall explains the differences between the upcoming game and film

Electronic Arts began working on its Superman Returns game based on the comic universe back in 2004, before meeting with director Bryan Singer. Executive producer Chris Gray sat down with Singer in early 2005 to get insight into the film and its plot.

"A literal version of the film would not have been the best way to go," said Gray. "Singer understood the need for more conflicts in the game. The film's central storyline provides the critical path of the game, but we've added episodic elements from the fiction to broaden the experience."

...making this game was a collaborative effort."

Gray said that in the movie, Lex Luther uses kryptonite in a unique way to battle Superman. In the game, the team takes this premise even further than it's taken in the film. Hall said that having central members of the film team gamers, themselves, helped the collaborative process.

"When you have filmmakers who play games they have a general sense of what's not fun to play in a game," said Jason Hall, senior vice president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "It also helps when the game's development team is asking the film's production team for content under a certain deadline, because they understand the importance of getting that content into the game."

Gray said there were a number of brainstorming sessions with the writers of the movie. The writers gave the team input and feedback on their ideas throughout the creative process. Gray said the process in making this game was a collaborative effort.

Hall said one of the areas the collaboration focused on was keeping the story line within the parameters of the action as much as possible.
