Preview: The Last Preview: Mass Effect (Page 2 of 2)
The "RP" in RPG would be meaningless without character customization, and BioWare would be completely remiss to leave that feature out. Several aspects of the main character can be chosen by the player, including appearance, gender, skills, and military background.
The closest you'll get to a movie-like gaming experience.
Six different character classes are available, three pure classes and three that are hybrid combinations. The pure classes consist of the Soldier, a specialist in combat and weaponry; the Engineer, master of technical abilities; and the Adept, who excels in the use of Biotecs, a powerful supernatural force that your character can tap into as needed.
The three hybrid classes, Infiltrator, Sentinel, and Vanguard, each combine two of the three pure classes to create a full array of options for those that don't wish to become too focused on one specific role. Combine these options with additional background choices such as where you hail from (born on Earth, on a colony or in the depths of space) and what you are most known for (for example, being a war hero, survivor of a legendary battle, or being ruthless enough to do anything that's needed to succeed) can alter how your character is perceived and in turn perceives those you meet throughout your adventure.
Given BioWare's impressive and proven track record, Mass Effect is looking to be directly on course to not only live up to the hype preceding its launch, but to excel beyond it. Xbox 360 owners will soon find out exactly how far beyond when it finally releases on November 20th.
