Crypto's whipping out some sweet new weapons for his new-gen debut. Check out the ones you'll want to get your hands on first.
Hi-larious!
So many of the industry's biggest kids have played in the sandbox genre that it's started to feel a little empty. From GTA and Crackdown to Saint's Row and Sony's new IP Infamous, the once-fresh idea of letting loose a morally ambiguous character in a wide-open city has becoming something of a cliche.
THQ's Destroy All Humans series has thus far sidestepped the criticism by presenting an outlandish character with no qualms about his rampant violence. With its third iteration, Destroy All Humans! Path of Furon, the problem of familiarity threatens to invade the series. The only method of defense is the game's hallmark; darkly hilarious and seriously effective weaponry. We got to check out four of the seven new ground and air guns at THQ's E3 showcase.
Katamari Da-smashy
Taking the series yet another decade further 1970's, Path of Furon finds Crypto, the protagonist of previous Earth invasions depressed, dissolutioned, and drunk. When he finds a mentor in an alien kung-fu master who teaches the wayward extraterrestrial some sweet new tricks, his appetite for destruction is renewed. The first new attack highlighted created a small vortex that pulls enemies and objects in your path into a ball that can be tossed at will--a katamari of pain, if you will. A similar weapon allowed Crypto to make a black hole appear anywhere on the map, sucking in nearby innocents and any of their earthly possessions that aren't nailed down.
Abuse your God-like powers!
Ancient Chinese alien secret, huh?
The other two attacks on display were a bit more sinister and stealthy in nature. The "Temporal Fist" attack stops time, allowing Crypto to alter the environment to his liking. The developers showed of the power's sicker benefits by setting up a group of monks in pyramid formation, then tossing a boulder in their direction when time resumed, creating a brutal bowling display. The power has some great gameplay implications as well, allowing Crypto to move enemies closer to destructive elements and his fragile alien body away from danger on less than a moments notice.
The most delightfully sinister new attack had Crypto taking to the skies in his spaceship. The tornado attack set his ship to stealth mode and unleashed a destructive dervish of wind that could be controlled with the shoulder buttons of your system of choice. The best part? Since Crypto's nowhere to be seen, he avoids detection while the hapless humans wonder why they incurred the wrath of God! Morons.
While we weren't able to check out any of the game's missions, the game's sense of humor pervaded the new weaponry. Sure, the game may not be as gorgeous as GTA IV or fresh as Infamous, but the Path of Furon has the potential to be fun and funny.
