The thing is, while beginning players will only have access to two pre-set classes ("Assault" and "Spec-Ops"), after you've put in a moderate amount of playtime you'll unlock the other two ("Heavy Gunner" and "Demo"). Given enough time, you'll eventually be able to design your own class by picking and choosing your favorite perks and armaments.
The Price of Realism
CoD4 will even officially introduce a fan-favorite multiplayer mod from past iterations called Realism Mode, which removes the heads-up display and re-distributes the damage inflicted by bullet wounds to more appropriate levels. Thus, a leg shot in Realism Mode drops players to the ground, while an arm shot prevents them from shooting and a torso shot is an instant kill.
Multiplayer is sporting a new "class" system
But in a game that's already toeing the line with an all-too-familiar middle-eastern conflict (though, it should be noted, there won't be any Iraq battles in Call of Duty 4), is making the game even more realistic really a good idea? Its visuals are already breathtakingly cinematic; can today's war-torn world accept such a re-creation of battle?
If Infinity Ward does its job, the answer may be yes. The public's acceptance of such a title hinges on its delivery: If CoD4 presents its conflict as a showcase of valor in the face of oppression, of justice against terror, then it will likely find the same success its predecessors enjoyed. After all, everyone wants to be a hero, and Call of Duty is all about heroism.
