Guitar Hero III (Page 2 of 3)

Battle Mode specifics...

According to an IGN's first look, there are seven different attacks that can be obtained and used in battle mode:

  • Broken String - randomly disables one of your opponent's fret buttons until they fix the button by rapidly tapping it again and again.
  • Difficulty Up - raises the difficulty level of the notes your opponent has to play. If the match is set on expert difficulty, this particular attack can't be obtained.
  • Amp Overload - sends the scrolling fret board into a vibrating frenzy, making timing notes an especially difficult task.
  • Whammy Bar - disables all five fret buttons on your guitar until you smack the whammy bar a few times to tweak your controller back into service.
  • Power Steal - steals an attack from your opponent and gives it to you to use. It's possible to use this attack even if your opponent doesn't have something to steal, but that just wastes the ability.
  • Double Notes - predictably doubles the number of notes your opponent is given to play for a short while. From what we can tell, this doesn't force you to play twice as fast, just to play larger chords (single notes turn into double chords, while doubles turn into triples).
  • Lefty Flip - reverses the orientation of every note on the fret board, making green notes appear on the right side and orange notes on the left.

While some of these attacks should be wickedly evil -- doubling notes and raising the difficulty level should make for some white-knuckled gameplay -- others have us more skeptical. Both the lefty flip attack and the amp overload ability make your opponent's fret board behave bizarrely, but what's to stop the person next to you from looking at your board for the duration of those effects?

Whatever the case may be, battle mode should still be a blast, though it's not the only thing Neversoft is tossing into the fray. They're promising that every version of Guitar Hero III to initially ship -- the PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii versions, to be precise -- will have wireless guitar peripherals.
