Preview: Grand Theft Auto IV (Page 2 of 2)
We still don't know much about Niko's challenges or objectives. Rockstar did show off a new ability-Niko can make outgoing cell phone calls from any location in order to meet up with acquaintances. How that plays into the final mission design is anybody's guess, but it does hint at a wider, broader interpretation of freedom.
Rockstar reps confirmed an online multiplayer mode for GTA IV, promising it would live up to the single-player game. Further details, such as game types and number of players, are off-limits for now. But Rockstar also shot down theories of a huge MMO-style GTA IV, putting fan expectations firmly in check.
Lots of new Pay 'n Spray locations to learn
The Road Less Taken
In one notable twist, GTA IV won't follow in the glitz-and-gangsters vein of Vice City and San Andreas. While organized crime will certainly be a factor, Niko's motivations are different from those of Tommy Vercetti and Carl "CJ" Johnson. He's not interested in conquering Liberty City. Niko wants stability, not an empire. What does this storytelling shift mean for GTA IV? Hopefully less over-the-top scenarios, fewer cartoonish characters, and a far more mature and sophisticated tone. If you're expecting GTA IV to be a carbon copy of San Andreas, you may be disappointed...but judging by what we've seen, Rockstar is on the right track. Will vision combined with violence be a step forward?
We'll find out for sure this October.
What celebrity voice will be attached to this nice-looking fellow? I'm going with the guy who played Huggy Bear.
