3. Perks are the perfect prize.

In addition to character and weapon upgrades, there is an extremely cool system of "perks," which are essentially characters enhancements that are earned/unlocked though online play. Your character can have up to three categories of perks active for each match you play, and new perks will unlock over time. Perks can be skill-focused, such as sprint increase, steady aim or bullet damage increase, or perks can be action-focused. The action perks include add-ons like providing two RPGs per match or "Last Stand," which lets you fire pistol rounds at enemies from the ground before you die.

"Last Stand" can earn you massive points.

There are also in-game perks and objectives. If you get three kills in a row, you can enable a UAV to view all enemies on the radar (usually, only enemies that are firing are visible), while five and seven consecutive kills without dying will get you A.I.-controlled air and helicopter strikes, respectively. And there are running objectives (like shoot down a helicopter) that can be accomplished in the background while you play.

4. Think points, not kills

In Modern Warfare, it's not only about kills (though they are still incredibly important); it's about points. Kills will get you the most points (5 or 10, depending on the type of game), but assists and other things will earn you points, too. For example, a kill with the Last Stand perk gets you mad points...if you can pull it off, of course. I think you should get rewarded more for not dying, like the new kill/death ratio in Halo 3. Other than that, though, the point system is a great way of making it not completely kill-focused.

5. It doesn't reinvent the FPS...

...but it does it so well. Granted, there are many things that Modern Warfare does that are creative and new (perks, upgrades, etc.), but the core gameplay is standard shooter. The combat is spot-on, though, and is a huge upgrade from Call of Duty 3. You rarely want to be shooting out in the open without cover, and usually it's best to move from cover to cover or stake out some high ground. Health regenerates, so there's no health packs to be had. And sprinting is the key to moving quickly across the terrain.

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to the website and try to get your beta key now! I'll see you on Xbox Live.
