Review: Dance Dance Revolution UltraMix
At last, Xbox owners can stop envying their PS2 counterparts.
Dance Dance Revolution has been an arcade staple for the last few years, but mastering the tricky step patterns at a buck a pop can be a costly (not to mention embarrassing) affair. Now the Xbox enables players to polish their chops in private and then show off their mad skillz on Xbox Live.
UltraMix offers all the standards that DDR fans have come to expect, including the calorie-counting Workout mode and newbie-necessary Training mode. Edit mode gives you the chance to choreograph your own routines, which you can then trade with other players on Xbox Live. New tunes will also be released on Xbox Live (in bundles for a nominal fee), making the game X-pandable?something that the PS2 titles have been unable to offer without the purchase of another disc. The dance music selection is nicely diverse, and you?re able to create your own custom EQs. While cel-shaded dancers show off some of the Xbox graphical capabilities, DDR has never really been about the graphics, and some players will find them distracting.
Now up to four players can do kickin? moves on one Xbox, so invite the whole dance team. New rhythm challenges and tempo shifts should keep the DDR experts on their toes. DDR is meant to by played with a dance pad (or two?letting players face off or experts link two pads), and this version is bundled with a soft mat. True connoisseurs will be glad to know that RedOctane is planning an Xbox converter for its arcade-style DDR mat. UltraMix is a great version of DDR, but in the end it is DDR?love it or hate it.
