Review: Phantom Crash

Phantom Crash rolls out challenging mech combat that?s massively wicked and a little weird.

In the far-flung future, man?s voracious energy consumption finally catches up to him. But even with civilization chasing technological meltdown, the world?s favorite pastime is a metal-mangling mech version of Robot Wars called Rumbling. Phantom Crash places you on the fight card at the controls of a mobile, armor-plated war-machine called a Scoobee as you play part mechanic, part tank jockey.

A port of a Japanese game by Genki, Crash sports plenty of high-tech Asian cool. The mechs look awesome, and you?ll blast to the last amid the arena-like ruins of Tokyo. The hypnotic sounds soar with 70 spacey, sometimes eerie, trance-style tunes.

There?s a genuinely weird RPG story line to the game, too, but the intense, freewheeling combat dominates. The multifaceted controls utilize every Xbox button as you orchestrate four separate weapons, 360-degree mech movement, quick hover bursts, and even dodges and strafes. They also manage a goodly amount of material and garage time as you build up and repair your rigs with 65 weapons, 150 body parts, and 16 different A.I. chipsets.

Like a lot of mech games, in the end Phantom Crash is basically a metal-to-metal slugfest. But with a slick visual style and fast-paced, finger-banging combat, it?s an impressive display of power and polish.
