Hands-On: Panzer Dragoon Orta

The premier Sega title for the Xbox didn't make it in time for Christmas, but good things come to those who wait.

Legend of the Dragoon
Once upon a time, Sega unleashed a little title called Panzer Dragoon onto its fledgling Saturn console. Featuring a vividly imaginative fantasy world, the game quickly garnered a small but vocal following and enjoyed two more installments before the curtains drew to an unfortunate close for Sega?s 32-bit system.

Enter Panzer Dragoon ORTA for the Xbox, which looks to finally get the series the widespread acclaim its fans feel it so deeply deserves. As in the first two games, the gameplay will most closely resemble a shooter, although it will feature some strategic elements borrowed from the RPG hybrid, Panzer Dragoon Saga. The shooting action will take place all around your Dragoon, requiring you to move the 360-degree camera frequently. Movement will always be restricted to whatever one direction the game dictates, but there will still be a surprising amount of depth to discover. Hands-on time with the game so far has revealed very intense action and many secrets to unlock.

More Than Meets the Eye
The series? graphics have always been remarkable, and ORTA will take full advantage of the powerful Xbox hardware. The preview version already contained all the unique design touches that flesh out this fully realized world.

Lush, orchestral music is another Panzer tradition that will return for the Microsoft debut. Fans can look forward to grand, sweeping overtures alternating with subdued mood music, which will reflect the onscreen action.

Good Thing Coming
The game has been delayed until January to get some extra tweaking, but Panzer Dragoon ORTA should be well worth the wait.
