Feature: Sudeki Developer Interview - Page 2

GP: How does the combat system work in the game? Is it real-time or turn based?

JA: It's completely in real-time. The ranged combat is like a first person shooter (this is optional for the player) and the melee combat is third person with fast featuring combos and timing. The summoning spells, which we call Spirit Strikes, and the Skill Attacks spells are taken from menus. We still keep pressure on the player when they're in overlay menus. We slow the game down to 10 percent using our Onetime technology so it all goes on while you frantically nip through the menus to get the right spell. Then you trigger the spell and you're back to real time. It's pretty cool. It looks very similar to "The Matrix."

GP: What about the magic system?

JA: There are two types of spells - Skill Attacks and Spirit Strikes. Skill Attacks are direct effect spells that each of the characters can cast and Spirit Strikes are huge summon spells that bring down servants of the gods to smite your enemies. They're triggered in Onetime and play out in real-time. They are as beautiful as they are deadly.

GP: Can you tell us a bit about these new screens? What's happening in the game at this point?

JA: Shot 22 is just outside of Shadani Mountain. It's where Buki, one of the main characters is from. We're going there to collect one of the ancient crystals. Shot 6 is a close up of Elco, the scientist member of your party. Shot 1 is the exit from Temple Mountain. The party is in trouble because on taking the crystal, they've opened up a rift in the world and the Arconites are teeming in looking for blood!

GP: After spending days working on the game, what do you do to relax?

JA: We have a local pub where most people congregate. The team is not a stranger to the demon drink. *smiles* Personally, I go home and play games most of the time. I've predictably got all of the consoles and a good PC so I play almost all of the good games I can. I go mountain biking and snowboarding when I get the time. The team is quite an eclectic mix. Some people are very active while others are not. Almost everyone here plays a lot of games though. For most people who truly love games, working on them doesn't spoil the magic.

GP: A project the size of Sudeki must be daunting at times. How does the team keep focused?

JA: "The Monkey Song." It's played whenever it's so late and so hard that things become surreal. "Look at the monkey, funny monkey...playing so merrily." You have to be there.

GP: Inspiration. Fantasy worlds don't come out of nowhere. What are some of your favorite RPGs, either electronic or pen-and-paper?

JA: My top favorites are: Zelda 64, Devil May Cry, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, and Angband (super Nethack). Some people on the team love Final Fantasy too. I don't. I think it's boring. Beautiful, but boring. Sorry.

GP: Is there anything we haven't talked about that you would like to mention?

JA: Sudeki is going to rock!! It's got all the action of Devil May Cry, with four simultaneously playable characters to control, the depth of progression and a storyline that RPG fans crave.
