Better than Tony Hawk Skateboarding?

I can't say that I played the first one, so I really didn't know what to expect from Skate 2, but I was still dissapointed. Now, I was a huge fan of Tony Hawks Pro Skating, 1, 2, and 3, and Skate 2 pales in comparison even to those older titles. The very first thing you'll notice are the sloppy graphics. I know a game isn't just about looking good, but come on, were in the next generation of gaming! EA could have done a lot better with the visuals, their just plain sloppy and it looks like it could have been released on the original XBOX.

Second of all, can we have a little speed here please? You'll hit either X or A to push of the board, and it doesn't even seem like your hardly going anywhere. Just to get any air on ramps the game makes you use this thing they call a "push", where you push up on the joystick. That to me just seems a little cheesy. I will admit that I am use to the controls from Tony Hawk, where you just hold down A to go and release it to jump. Its a whole lot easier doing it that way. Over all the game moves to slow.

I am also new to the innovative "flick it" control, where you use the right joystick to do your tricks. This is actually a good idea, but it takes some time getting used. The downside to that is sometimes you'll "flick it" trying to do a 360 pop shove it, but you end up doing something else. Like I said, it's a good idea, but it takes some time getting used to.

Overall, the game is too sloppy and demands too much from the controls for me to give it a good score. We all know the last couple of Tony Hawk skatboarding games have been a little over the top, but at least they have been easy on the eyes with nice, tight controls, and fun to play with friends. I say give this a rent before buying, I know I wish I had.

When the first Skate debuted, it offered up a realistic simulation-based alternative to the unrealistic circus that the Tony Hawk franchise had become. Now, the sequel is here with some subtle improvements that push virtual skateboarding to new heights. Still, it's pretty obvious that this franchise has some work to do before it can fully knock the Birdman off his perch.
