Toast, Jam and Earl Grey Tea please!
OK so the title has not much to do with the game or this review but you gotta admit it was a clever use of alliteration! Most people, like me, who loved the original just had to buy this game! In all honesty this game was the entire reason I decided on the Xbox instead of any of the other recent consoles to hit our shelves! Even so, with ToeJam & Earl 2: Panic On Funkotron, I was a little sceptic as to whether this game would be a redeemer for the series, or just confirm that you cannot beat the original. It was definately a good idea to return to exploring a 3D map as opposed to a bog-standard platform game. So it is based on what made the original TJ&E fantastic. Now however, they have extra presents like the XRay Glasses, as well as the good old classics such as Icarus Wings and Rocket Skates; added earthlings like the provocative cheerleaders, as well as the mad dentist and flying cherub (la la la). My favourite return though has to be the little horned guy in red pyjamas with a pitchfork. Instead of being there on the map and chasing after you, every so often dancing, he simplyreturns to the surface with you any time you fall of the edge of the map and chases after you for a bit until returning to the dark netherworld with a plate of madras curry (hey, even vindaloo's too hot for that place). Also welcome Latisha. Now, we all know that she's only there to make the game a little more interesting and avoid being sued on sexual discrimination. Nevertheless she works as an excellent added character and plays a vital role in keeping humour to the game. My favourite additive though to the game is picking up those 'beat note' things. As you walk, hit the corresponding button in time to the beat to help convert earthlings to the way of the funk. In all ways, this game really has succeeded in redeeming the TJ&E series. Still, nothing beats the original!

Why Sega?
The old TJ&E were classics but it looks like the years haven't been too kind. The game is pretty and it has a sense of humor but they sucked the fun out of it. Heavy on the funk with terrible voiceovers that don't fit the characters. The game is way too easy and the plot stinks. Instead of looking for spaceship parts they're looking for lost records. It really takes all the urgency out of it. I know Sega didn't want to repeat themselves but give me a break. It's really sad to see what they did to my old favorite. I hope they make another and fix some problems. The game is not for everyone so rent before you buy.

Whazzup???...
This game tries to recapture the charm of the original back in the days of the Genesis. It falls just short, but worth every penny. But, I wish there was a mute button for Toe Jam. I can't stand hearing him say "ah'yight" all the time.
