Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time is an upcoming game in the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles subseries developed by Square Enix to be released in Spring 2009. A vast improvement...

If you look at FFCC on the GC, there was a great transition to the DS with FFCCROF. Visuals had to be sacrificed, but all in all, great visuals for the DS. FFCC on the GC boasted multi-player support through GBA connectivity(A mistake to use only the GBA in my opinion). FFCCROF made the transition and used the built in WiFi for connectivity via multi-player. The draw back with the DS title is that unlike the GC, multi-player took place outside of the realm of storyline. The action stayed the same but magic use went from collecting orbs with unlimited use to collecting or buying orbs for a single use. Combination spells went from combining orbs to stacking arcane rings. Taking a look forward, EOT improved upon the visuals of ROF. It seemed to add cut scenes in the same "game engine" movie quality that I enjoyed in FF4DS. Magic remained somewhat the same with different controls options. Multi-player now resides on the internet and local Wifi and across platforms. You take multi-player through the story mode as well. As far as the engine, it is sound. I will say there is a bit of lag in offline story mode when there is a large area and many monsters. I use the DS version and I run a DSi and seem to see the lag. The online can be a bit laggy as well, that may be my connection. All in all, nothing more than I seen in the first title. The AI has not much to be desired but nothing worse than I seen in the first title. I will say that the AI does keeps itself alive better and I have seen the AI heal my PC as well. A nice touch! The storyline itself is a bit lacking from the rich story in ROF, but it adds to the idea of creating multiple party members. Which is another perk, custom creating your party, similar to Final Fantasy on the NES. The experience curve seems to be not as steep and the skills and resistances seem to be on a softer curse as well. Resistances are increased by collecting orbs, something different..

All in all, a decent title and vast improvement over Rings of Fate...

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time makes a lot of improvements on past games in the series, especially with its near-flawless online, wireless multiplayer. Even with a severely lacking story and graphics that don't really live up to Final Fantasy standards, the hack-and-slash RPG action is the best since the original Crystal Chronicles. Overall, Echoes of Time proves itself to be a good dungeon-crawler, despite a less than stellar Wii port and awful A.I. compensation for tedious, boring single player gameplay.
