The gameplay takes a while to get used to if you don't read up on it or read through some of the faqs, but once you understand what your doing a little you will love it...

I started out with out reading anything about the game and not having a clue what I was suppost to do, but once I started learning what to do the hard way this game became by far my favorite game on the PSP...

Its challenging and at the start very complex, but you should get used to everything with time... Its unlike any other final fantasy game other then the name... The only thing that final fantasy fans might find similar is all of the job classes which are very easy to get used to and very fun to take your time to learn all about them...

You can run through the game which out doing anything to level up your characters and it might take you 30 hours if your good at RPG's (50 if you have no idea what your doing) or you could go and try to find all the secret characters and master every class (which is what I did) and this game could last for 100's of hours...

The game can get a little boring after 100 hours, but if you put it down for a while you will soon find your self wanting to go back and master everything like I did...

I'm working on mastering my 3rd Dark Knight and this game has a ton of replay value... Its a must have for any PSP owner...

FFT- The War of the New Text and Slowdowns

Pros Cons
Addictive gameplay
Tight controls
Just plain fun
Engaging story
Amazing visuals

A true classic and masterpiece from the PS1 era. While still awesome in its own right, it didn't clear the hurdle all the way when making its way to the PSP...

For those who've experienced the original, you're familiar with the typos and somewhat confusing translations it had. For the "enhanced" port, Square-Enix decided to re-write every bit of dialogue, item and ability descriptions, and even change the names of several characters. This isn't an issue for new players, but for veterans such as myself, you'll find yourself using the help feature to check what an ability does more than you should. Was there really a need for such a drastic overhaul on just about everything with binding text? No.....no there wasn't.

The only other problem the game is unfortunately affected with are massive slowdowns. You may hear others say the original had the same slowdowns, but as someone who still owns the original, I can tell you it is not the same. The original scarcely had slowdowns with specific actions (namely huge spells), whereas the PSP port has slowdowns on every action you perform in battle. Even using a potion with make the game slow down to a crawl. Completely unacceptable! Square-Enix dropped the ball on keeping the frame rate at least on the same level as the original. However, once you play the game long enough, you become accustomed to all the slowdowns, and you eventually forget it's even happening, until you quit and play it again at a later time, of course.

Though I have not dabbled in the multi-player component of the game, I haven't heard many (if any) complaints about it.

Overall, if you liked the original and/or strategy RPGs in general, FFT:TWotL is a must-buy. Despite the massive re-work on the majority of the text and slowdowns, you'll have a great time with it.

Re-live the war, with extra goodies.

When doing a remake of one of the greatest PS1 games of all time, you would think "lets just make a port of it to a handheld, and let them buy it." Bearing the name Final Fantasy in general would guarantee high sales. But knowing Square, they don't work like that. When they port, they nearly remake the entire game, re-translate it, add a few extra goodies, and transform it into a completely new game. That is what came with "Tactics: The War of the Lions."
Story: Even though I do know the story of Tactics by heart, this game changed that completely, and for the better. The re-translation made took most of the events into new light, and more understandable light. Some of the more confusing things were made clear, and with it, the entire game. The new scenes added much as well, especially the new cell-shaded scenes. I was thoroughly entertained by the story alone, and every time I replay it, I discover new things about the story. The new scenes added much as well, such as what Delita did during the main game, and the new scenes concerning newcomers Luso and Baltheir.
Gameplay: Nothing new in this department, but why fix what isn't broken? It was fairly entertaining, and fit with the story. The tactical value the game isn't that good compared to many modern games, since you could win this game using just "attack" alone and keeping strong soldiers. But the games AI is somewhat varied, but for the most part, isn't that intelligent. They usually place themselves into the worst places possible. But as you get further into the game, and the number of jobs increase for both you and the AI, it becomes slowly better. The new jobs are a nice touch, but are useless if you can't play multiplayer. Speaking of which, multiplayer was a very good idea to add to the game, but works at a snails pace. But the game offers some great challenges if you go along with it.
Audio/Visual Nothing new in this department either. Spells and summons got a nice make-over, and the new CGI cell-shaded scenes were a great touch. But mostly it looks the same, only brighter. Music isn't memorable, but it fits into the game, and sets the tone and mood for the game. A nice annoyance on the few seconds lag between spell casts and the appropriate sounds isn't all to good, but only a few people would care.
Conclusion To wrap this up, this game is a worthy addition to anyones PSP library, and will take a nice chunk of your time to finish it. The new content and re-translation makes this a pick-up for anyone who enjoyed the original Tactics, and to put this in handheld form makes it even better. The only problems are with the audio lag (which isn't a big deal at any rate), the wanting of more content, and the slow moving multiplayer. But these do little to detract from the games overall presentation, and the nostalgia it brings.

Emphasis On Success

Awesome and fun. A great remake of a great game. Very addicting and holds great replay value, especially with the multi-player mode.
