Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition - PSP

Same old, same old. But still fun.

I wasn't the least it surprised when I first played this game that it is an exact port of the console versions. They didn't bother to add any new features, new cars, or even new levels. It would have been nice if they had included the levels in the remix version. From the start at the main menu, you get a feel that the controls are a bit wonky and unresponsive. And the menu controls are. The gameplay controls work, to a point. Unless you have a broken control stick like I do, then I suppose it might be better. I was forced to switch my steering to the d-pad instead, but its no big bother. The gameplay is what you'd expect from this game: high speeds, annoying opponents, tons of cars, plenty of tracks, and a lot of (mostly) open road. I have yet to become bored with the tracks, but frustrated enough to almost break the game in two. In some of the courses, you are forced to restart several times in order to find the right way to get to the next checkpoint. In some cases, they are spaced so far apart that its ridiculous and hard to tell what path to choose. But I suppose thats just all part of the fun of the game. The graphics are at least up to par. They are rarely glitchy, never incomplete, hold up fairly well under the high speed moments, and overall look good. But I suppose thats the price you pay for a long load time. The cars are very well detailed and the customization is good. A few more graphic designs wouldnt hurt though. I just dont understand the point in having to pay $1000 for a custom color. The video on the other hand is pixelated, but there are only a few of them so it never hurts to watch. The sound is good. I like the variation in the soundtrack. Listening to just one genre gets annoying, so I prefer to listen to it all, despite my disliking of hip hop. The music ranges from hip hop to rock to techno, drum and bass, and dance hall. So its enough of a mix to satisfy anyone. The cars on the other hand tend to be nothing more that monotonous (repeating) roars, but each car sounds different, so thats a plus. I think the only voice acting comes from the guy who owns Six One Nine Customs. Its not bad, but it sounds like a white guy imitating a Spanish accent. The game has enough things to do in it to keep me interested in it for a long while. I've had it for about six days by now and Im still in San Diego. And it takes a while to get enough money together to buy a new car. Let alone enough money to buy all of the upgrades for one. I never completed the Xbox version because I rented it. But I think Im less farther along right now than I was in that one. I suppose its because I played the other one too long. But either version, its still a good game despite its few flaws.
