Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires - PS2

DW5:Empires, easy to love when the last DW game you played was DW4.

Koei and it's Dynasty Warriors series gets a lot of flack from game reviewers who have to review 4 iterations a year. I know that would get old for me as well since the short development window does not allow for a whole lot of advancement. But if understand that, then as a game consumer, delay your purchase of a dynasty warriors game by a generation. I bought DW4, skippped DW4:xtreme legeneds, DW4: Empires, DW5, DW5: xtreme legends, and jumped back in with DW5: Empires..... and I love the game. My wife and I will stay up until 2 in the morning taking out waves of adversaries. The little addition of strategy into the hack-n-slash just makes this game perfect in so many ways. Things that could be better (why I didn't give it a 5): - 2 player mode only exists in the main campaign in its fight sequences. It would have been nice to see a two or even 4 player mode in empire mode where two different armies could compete for China. Not sure how it would have worked, but it would have been nice to see. - Draw distance and disappearing enemies (when you're surrounded) can be frustrating. I'm hoping this gets addressed in DW6 when it hits the PS3.

another empire to overthrow

Well.....since so many people like this, it will always survive. However even advanced story with new fatures, won't help this convert anyone to a permanent fan of this. I mean if you are having a bad day, it's good to go in a hack-in slash mission, but this game tries to make it so that you need tactics. I've played several games of this series, and though I liked the others that let you have musou mode, this game doesn't, and since it only offers one mode that I would consider, Empire mode. It's sad that even with the developers best attempts to make this a tactiful game, you can go through the whole game without even using tactics, and just recruiting. The edit features are the same....they should really work on that....and probably add the duel from number 4, as well as add more possible dioalogue and better features if they are to keeptheir fans happy. So I give it a 3, if you don't have those days where you need a rampage to get you through....then I suggest renting it.

dude if you liked them before

dude, I was a big fan of the upgrade's. but it is a big pain in the ass gettin all the new tactics. But once you get them th4ey will be a bigass help. It's still a hack in slash, but now you can control your allies thus helpin you not always gettin your ass kicked. There is very little story, but there's never really too much story in the series. So it will be fun alot longer than the usual series

While there really isn't all that much to get excited about, fans of the genre (and the series) should find plenty to keep their button mashing buttons busy.
