Cold Fear - PS2

Not RE4

Let me just start by saying this: I am going to compare this game to RE4, ther's no escaping it. Now that that's out of the way, lets start discussing Cold Fear. This game has everything going for it. It was published by UBISoft, a company that knows good games (187 Ride or Die not withstanding). It's also being developed by Darkworks, creators of the great Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare. So what's the problem: Forevery step it takes forward, it takes two steps back. Let's start with a plus: the graphics. Cold Fear's graphics are actually better than RE4's. The levels look down right creepy, most of the monsters are actually cool, and the game has an xbox style sheen to it, including the great lighting effects. Unfortunately, the zombies you face through 75% of the game all look the same, and the "unique" head splatter effect looks like soemthing you find in a dirty diaper. Next is the controls. The controls are actually very well done. The quick change weapon and reload buttons beat the hell out of RE4's menu system. Unfortunaely, the rocking boat makes it hard to get headshots, meaning that you will waste alot of ammo. This is made even more difficult by the game's dated collision detection. In RE4, shooting a zombie in the legs or arms has an effect, In Cold Fear no matter where you shoot, it's all the same. And then there's the main character, Tom Hansen. This guy looks and feels like a biproduct of the Generic Game Hero Machine. Plus he's a coast guard. Come on, at least make him a former marine. That's like saying Solid Snake works for the Border Patrol. The worst part is that it doesn't nkow what it want's to be: Action or Horror. The fast gameplay and heavy metal music during encounters don't make the game scary, but the tight spaces and bad collision detection slow the action down. Basically, if you want a game with tons of style and little substance, buy this game, otherwise, stick with RE4.

Cold Fear - PS2

Cold Fear rocks!

First of all this game can't hold a candle to RE4 but then who can? I have to give props to Ubisoft for a great attempt though. The feeling you get being trapped on a boat during a storm is so cool. Trying to keep your balance while blowing the heads off zombies is no easy task. Being from Ubisoft you can be sure the graphics are great. I own both the xbox and PS2 versions and the PS2 holds its own. There are two big issues though and that's no map and bad save points. You can get lost and turned around real easy and the save points are too far apart. This game is better than the RE outbreak 1&2 as far as I'm concerned. I bought this game new for ten bucks and if you call yourself a horror fan then you should own this game.
