Great New Features, Senile AI
EA's NHL franchise never seems to disapoint me whenever they release a new NHL game, although I felt NHL 2004 wasn't as good as some of its 'founding fathers', the game's Dynasty mode kept me playing for months. The game's appearance gets better ever year. most of the graphics this year looked improved, the player models appeared improved this year but the crowd look liked a bunch of people outta the Sims; there was room for improvement for the graphics and animations used for the crowds. The game's AI is well.. devistating how senile it is. Defensemen play like they are practically blind and are afraid to poke check, although the only time the AI seems to click is when the computer is set to the hardest difficulty. The new hooking / tie up controls add depth to the game, but the engine was really picky whenever I tried hooking or tying someone up at the boards, The Bruise control system i thought could of been a little better, like just holding down the triangle button instead of having to stray down to the r3 just to make a little more decent hit. The bottom line, NHL 2004 has added depth to keep you playing for months with the Dynasty Mode (play as your favourite team or fantasy draft).

This is a travesty...
They really wimped out on this season of NHL. The Dynasty Mode is a gem, but the gameplay is not. I am tired of breaking people through the glass, and the commentary wasn't funny. I noticed that a lot of people dispute that, and I have and idea: On the options screen, select "funny" or "serious" commentary. Anyways, Bruise Control should be called "Lose Control". It's sloppy and widely innaccurate, unless you crush the A.I. thru the glass. 2003 was a better game than this on gameplay. But with all those problems, it's a decent game, just not for 50 bucks.

oh!! Foresberg smashes Hull right through the glass into the crowd
This is one of the best sports games I have ever played. This games has the most bone crushing hits I have ever seen. And don't forget about the all new fight engine. I me come on how would you like to smash your least favoirte hockey player right across his face and knock him off his block while his helmet goes flying down the ice. This has some of the most advanced techinques I have ever seen and you can manually and automaticly do almost every move including your body checks. It also has the foreign leagues from Germany, Finland and Switzerland. And it has the teams from around the world. It has very easy controls and is a great buy.

The best NHL game of the year?
NHL 2004 is quite possibly the best ice hockey game this year, but it falls below standards of the past. EA has put an amazing amount of depth to the series, adding three foreign leagues and a dynasty mode. This doesn't make up for the incredibly low computer AI. To make this perfectly clear, your AI controlled players run circles instead of actually getting the puck when it's loose. I would definitly say I've seen better AI in the Super Nintendo NHL games. The largest problem this game has is the fact that you cannot delete created players unless you want to delete your entire saved state for NHL 2004 on your PS2 memory card. This also goes the same for your created teams. Instead of giving players the option of some unique and new jersey styles, you are only given the option of reusing current NHL styles and slapping a cheap logo on the front. NHL 2004 is worth a rental or even a purchase if you're a huge NHL fan like myself. But for those new to the sport or the series from EA, I would give NHL 2002 for the PC a try before this.

very good (very fast) game
I had purchased ESPN Hockey and found it to be much more boring than last years version, and so I decided to get NHL 2004 for PS2. It is tons of fun! The speed of the skaters is just right, the hits are huge if you use the Bruise Control just right and the manual deke system has made me jump out of my chair after scoring on a breakaway. Yes, it really is that good. I know there are some flaws, but what game doesn't have that? I'm willing to trade that for some quick gameplay, big hits and direct control over the puckhandler. A good (and fun) hockey game.
