Whiplash - PS2

Whippen up a good ole time

Platformers these days always have a hero and a tiny sidekick who provides the comic relief. But they usually fail to get you laughing every time something comes out of his mouth. Well Whiplash accomplishes this in a wacky premise of escaped test animals bringing an evil corporation to it's knees. Basically, you control Spanx. A weasel who has had one to many experiments done on him, as those wires in his head can attest. But hooked on to you by a chain is an indistructable bunny named redmond. Who you will use to smash, crash, and slam anything in your path while he complains about it. What's your mission you ask? To travel from the smile for the public surfice of Genron to the ugly inner shell of pollution and smash anything and everything in it. You'll also be freeing as many of your animal brethrin to join in the fun. The audio is great. All dialogue is meant to relieve the stress of platform hopping and it does just that. Although the game does feature a low polygon count it just seems to add to the charm that the game has. There is so much character to the game, that even silent Spanx has a likable personality. The problem with the game is that once you strip away the funny and whacky outer core all you get is a run of the mill platformer. Different combos can be gained which basically just require you to mash buttons, you can dip Redmond into different chemicals to get an elemental weapon. Although these aren't bad, the game requires you to travel through the same areas you have already been through over and over. This can lead to a massive boredom spell as the player will be tempted to come back later. It seems that the developers threw this in at the last minute to extend the life of a relatively short game. Hallways seem to add to the boredome factor. Although the rooms are different, you will always have to travel through a long hallway. But even with these shortcomings, the game is so funny that most gamers probly won't care, humor wins all as they say.
