Far Cry - PC

Best game this year? I smell a GOTY award

There was no doubt in anyones mind that Far Cry would be an exceptional game. THe graphics just punch you in the face and even deceive you into believeing you're actually in a jungle. The 5.1 Dolby Digital is excellant (better than most games with ghetto 7.1), and most of the acting is on par with titles like Half Life, GTA3 and Max Payne 2. Controls could be a problem if you use some wacko setup, but i got it fine and gamepads are support (I think). The vehicle controls are the only bad thing, but its passable. THe story isnt too original, but for some reason, its engaging. The first level is the only linear one in the 20 missions you'll undertake. The weapon selection is a bit small, but like Halo before it, Far Cry uses its weapons well. It doesnt fall to Goldeneye syndrome even though some guns share ammo. Thank god for its grenade button (like Max payne 2) or esle this would be very frustrating. First, the AI is incredible. I havent seen anything this well since Half Life. They scout out areas and look for you even! THey follow sound, and have patrol areas. THe level structre is magnificent, and is very open ended. Patterns couldnt be followed 2 times in a row. The audio kicks in with helping you find enemies, as well as the graphics (with dynamic shadows pointing enemy postions if a light is in the way). The 20 levels dont have cut and paste design (*cough* Halo) and throw creative challenges at you (like the Volcano level). I can't explain more due to the word limit, so just buy this game, please! Support crytek, and let them creative more genre defining titles!
