NBA 2K2 - GameCube

Best Sim Basketball Game Available on the Cube

Sega always brings it to the table when sports games are concerned, there's no two ways around it. While EA Sports is still the champion of the world overall, Sega doesn't just sit around being complacent with second best. It always tries to better itself, and NBA 2K2 is definitely an improvement. The sound in this game is what first caught my attention. The crowd is very intelligent and stays in touch with the game very well. Big plays are rewarded with huge roars from the crowd, as well as the crowd going ballistic at the mere mention of a star player's name. That means that the name Michael Jordan will get a bigger reaction than the name Lindsey Hunter. However, if you're on either end of a blowout nearing the end of the 3rd quarter or the begining of the 4th you won't hear much of anything because just like in real life the crowd is gone. The controls are very easy to get the hang of and you'll be able to ball like a pro in two, three games tops. The player models look very sharp though the colors and graphics in general are a little too bright and let you know right away you're playing a video game. Where as with a game from EA you'd be able to see the nails in the wood. Not that that's a good or bad thing either way. The announcing didn't get a huge overhaul as far as dialouge goes, you'll still be hearing a lot of old lines from previous editions though not quite as repetitive. The announce team is also a bit more on point in this version. But now that Sega has a partnership with ESPN look for 2K3 to kick it up a notch. Especially with that whole SportsCenter thing.
