Tim and Eric talk games and comedy

If you haven't seen Tim and Eric's brand of unique comedy, you're missing out. Check out what Adult Swim's funniest duo have to say about all things comedy and gaming in this interview with GamePro!

We got to chat with the subversively hilarious comedy team recently. Read on for the entire interview, chock full of Tim and Eric's greatest skits!

Dave: How did the Tim and Eric Awesome Show come about? Did you conceive it while you were working on Tom Goes to the Mayor, or did you have the idea before that?

Tim: We've always wanted to do the Tim and Eric Show, from the beginning of our friendship, and Tom Goes to the Mayor was sort of a detour from that journey.

Eric: Detour. [Laughs] Tom Goes to the Mayor was one of our short bits that was part of the Tim and show originally that kind of branched into its own show

Dave: How was Adult Swim with the idea of a mostly non-animated show?

Eric: Well, yeah, in Tom Goes to the Mayor we had a lot of live-action commercials and newscasters and they kind of saw that as a show, and they were just really awesome and willing to take a chance on something that was at first kind ofthey're trend-setters.

Tim: Adult Swim is more of sensibility than a style, so I think Mike Lazzo realized that he could move out of the cartoon realm.

Dave: I think you guys may have to thank Saved By the Bell. Didn't they try that?

Tim: Yeah, they did. They tried... there was a lot of esoteric reasons for it too.

Dave: Yeah, I mean, also for the fact that it was completely awesomemaybe the best show ever.

Eric: We had Screech from Saved By the Bell on Tom Goes to the Mayor once.

Dave: Oh, I'm trying to place which episode that is...

Eric: He was just at the end of a surreal episode.

Tim: He had hiccups.

Eric: He had hiccups, yeah.

Dave: So, now d'you think that he'll make the jump to the Awesome Show, or...?

Tim and Eric: Screech?

Dave: Yeah.

Eric: Wow.

Tim: I think we've burned through that relationship.

Dave: Was that pre- or post-porno? I know he did one.

Tim: I think it was right around then.

Eric: Yeah.

Tim: I think it was right before.

Eric: I think he did itjust kind ofjust pushed that whole porno thing. Have you seen that thing?

Dave: No, I've read about it, and apparently they don't even know if he did it. It's weird. He did appearances but they don't know if he's the one having sex, so...

Eric: Ohh. Shit.

Dave: Yeah. All right, I'd love to talk more about Screech, but we're running low on time. You killed off one of your most popular characters within five minutes of your second season premiere. Obviously, you're still doing new Casey and his brother skits, but why did you decide to do that?

Tim: I think if an idea comes to us, we do it. And we don't really care about the consequences and we always know that we can just bring them back. And, you know, the show doesn't need to live by its own, you know...

Eric: Casey is also one of our popular/mysterious characters. He had a lot of physical problems and we just wanted to see what would happen, and fans were freaked; they were upset and then it was like how the hell could they die and...

Tim: We just like playing with our audience's emotions and then denying it later.

Dave: So I guess you are saying that Tim, you will be back for the next episode?

Eric: [chuckle] Yeah, we'll see.

Tim: But you know, the great thing about Casey is that all of the videos that we show are clearly these archive, old footage, so if he does die, we felt "oh, we'll just keep showing old footage of Casey".

Dave: Did you ever receive feedback from the folks working on Shrek or people from Bacardi or Papa Johns for your skits for those products?

Tim: We've heard apparently that everybody involved with Shrek, aside from Mike Meyers and those guys saw it and loved it. But they are completely aware of what they are up toyou know, and how silly the marketing of it has become. We didn't send it to them, though. We were not in cahoots.

Dave: You've had quite a few guest stars on both of your shows. Who were you most surprised to have?

Eric: I'd say... Robert Loggia is big and Tom Skerrit for me. Those are just guys that I couldn't believe would do this silly thing. And they are both amazing guys.

Tim: So ingrained in our minds from afternoon movies: Top Gun and Scarfacethey are like superheroes.

Eric: Another big one we had recently was Steve Schirripa who plays Bobby Bacala in the Sopranos. Even though he's not like a mega-amazing actor, the Sopranos is one of the biggest shows in the world now. It's kind of awesome...

Tim: My mind doesn't really separate Sopranos from reality. I assume that that world really exists.

Eric: We were like really careful around him and make sure that we didn't piss him off.

Tim: He actually busted me for the way I pronounced "capice" (ka-paych). He made fun of me.

Eric: Yeah, we also heard him saywell, I'm not going to say it, but... he said some crazy Italianisms.

Dave: Have you ever had to turn anyone away in terms of guest stars?

Eric: We usually take anyone we can get.

Tim: Tom Green did something that we never used. Todd Barry did something that we never used.

Eric: But usually it's because it doesn't work; it's not that we won't accept you. We won't take people that we hate. There are very people like that though. Johnny Fairplay we turned away.

Dave: Well, good.

Eric: I'll say that much.
