Mother 1, 2, 3 Coming To GBA

Nintendo's putting out the first two games in the Earthbound RPG series for their portable this summer. The third game's also been resurrected. Time for a Saturn dance.

Nintendo's notorious Japanese TV advertising has struck again?the company's newest commercial in the region marked the official announcement of Mother 1+2, a Game Boy Advance port of the first two games in the RPG series known as Earthbound over here, as well as new confirmation that work on Mother 3 is progressing smoothly...but not on the console you'd expect.

Mother/Earthbound is a series of RPGs scripted by Japanese writer Shigesato Itoi and developed internally within Nintendo. The series, which is known for its strange characters and even stranger sense of humor, has a spotty release history in America?the first game was released for in 1989 only in Japan, while the second title found a U.S. Super Nintendo launch in 1995. Mother 1+2 will apparently be straight ports of these two titles; it's due to hit Japanese GBA systems on June 20.

Most mind-blowing for series fans, however, was a startling revelation at the end of the ad: Nintendo's apparently still developing Mother 3... except it'll now be a Game Boy Advance title. Mother 3 is one of the most famous games that never happened?Nintendo started developing it just after the Nintendo 64 launch, but the project experienced delay after delay before finally getting the axe in 2000. No release date or information was given for Mother 3, but we can't help but wonder how well it'll survive the transformation from an N64 product to a GBA one.
