EA to Shut Down Origin Systems

Publisher offers staff the choice to relocate to California.

Electronic Arts is planning to shut down its Origin Systems development studio in Austin, Texas, and is offering the staff the choice of either relocating to California or taking a severance package. The company is best known for Richard Garriot's Ultima RPGs and Chris Robert's Wing Commander series (who have both moved on to different companies).

EA has been doing a lot of reshuffling and consolidating, as it recently shutdown Westwood Studios and relocated the Maxis studio to Los Angeles. How this will ultimately affect its lineup remains to be seen.
