Feature: GamePro Editors' Choice *2007* (Pg.4/5)

Action Honors

WINNER: God of War II (PS2)

With lines blurring between genres and space running tight, the GamePro editors made the unusual decision to lump Mario Galaxy into the "Action" genre. And in a surprise upset, hack-and-slash paragon God of War II walked away with the win anyway. Overall, Sony earned three nominations here, including Heavenly Sword and Ratchet & Clank, proving that the company knows action games.

RUNNER-UP: Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)

RPG Honors

WINNER: Mass Effect (Xbox 360)

Mass Effect was simply the best pure role-playing game to arrive this year. It's gorgeous, it's deep, and it represents one of the finest achievements of the year. Mass Effect is an early favorite for the Game of the Year awards - check back next month to find out who wins.

RUNNER-UP: Rogue Galaxy (PS2)

Racing Honors

WINNER: Motorstorm (PS3)

Though it was an odds-on favorite, Burnout Paradise was disqualified due to its early 2008 release date. The GamePro editors unanimously chose Motorstorm for its vicious crashes and thrilling open-world racetracks, and ignored the sim-heavy racers.

RUNNER-UP: none

Sports Honors

WINNER: Mario Strikers Charged (Wii)

A pervasive presence in the office during lunch hour, Mario Strikers Charged handily won the Sports category. Skating sim Skate also earned a few nods.
