PlayStation 3
Folklore ($60, out now)
Despite a few mixed reviews, Folklore has quietly become a sleeper exclusive for PS3. The adventure RPG is slower than most, but patient gamers looking for a unique experience are sure to enjoy the novel combat system, the game's attention to detail, and its refreshing visuals. Folkore is a legitimate gem, and one of the most original games of the year, especially considering the large number of predictable RPGs crowding the market. A welcome change.
Eye of Judgment ($70, out now)
If you, dear PS3 owner, detest card games like Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic: The Gathering, skip this one. However, if you once dabbled and/or regularly play in Friday night card tournaments, Eye of Judgment is right up your alley. The peripheral-based game uses PlayStation Eye to magically bring specially marked trading cards to life on your TV. What could easily seem gimmicky is actually well executed and graphically impressive. Once the initial setup has taken place (everything you need is included in the box), Judgment is an addictive and rarefied pleasure.
Haze ($60, Dec 4)
Haze, now exclusive to PS3, promises big things as first person shooter. In addition to online four-player co-op and 24-person multiplayer, the game requires players to ration an enhancement drug called Nectar for performing special abilities. When used in excessive, however, Nectar causes averse effects such an inability to distinguish friend from foe. Additionally, events that occur in multi-player mode are said to affect and alter the single-player story line and vice versa. Definitely an ambitious first for games, and one to keep an eye on.
