The ps3 and wii would not have been as good without the sucess of the origional XBOX. The origional XBOX showed that some new concepts could work in a console. First off was that a system could have a harddrive. Before this you had to buy tons of memory cards (especally if you played sports games). Next was the idea that system links and online play could improve and become popular. You could actually have 8 player battles on a FPS game like halo which was sweet at the time cause before that it was only 4 players on one TV. Likewise XBOX live showed that you could get more gamers online on a console game. What if XBOX live did not attract alot of people or was never inclued for XBOX? do you think xbox live for 360 would be as good as it is and do you think the ps3 would have free online? probally not. In addition to that the XBOX showed the importance of joystick sensitivity. Why do you think sovy increased the sensitivity on its sticks for the 6 axis controller? Cause As good as the dualshock sticks were they were garbage compaired to the origional xbox joysticks. Before xbox what system could let you put you CD's in your system? The answer is not even one. I used to get sick of the gaming soudtracks after i played a game for 6months to a year. But for XBOX you could bput custom music in to pump you up which even though a small detail is pretty sweet. Thanks to the sucess of this you can now do this on any 360 game during any level or setting (and i think you can on the ps3). Now xbox was not a perfect system i am not trying to say that. The origional controller was horrible, and even the controller s was still quite big. But the things it tested out or experemented with really set the standard for the next gen systems.

yeah, i agree on most the things that you said. but every system owes something to a predessor. look at the ps2, it brought dvd playback, never had a console done that. because of the ps2, dvd's became mainstream the way they did. it did what ps1 did with cd's. without the NES controller, there wouldn't have been a SNES controller. without the N64 joystick, there might as well not have been the 2 analog sticks that we are so accustomed to. so its not just the XBOX that paved the way this next-gen is looking. history repeats itself.

The PC had all this stuff before the Xbox. The Xbox needs to thank the PC (oh yeah go figure, Microsoft darn youz!). Which means the PS3 and 360 Need to thank the PC. The Grandaddy of em all.

good point but you XBOX showed that this could work on a gaming console. Only XBOX Live would drag people off counterstrike's online to play halo 2.

yea thats a good point but i was just posting this cause this is a current issue. The xbox is being ditched by mircrosoft cause there foucsing on 360. I wanted to buy a first party XBOX controller and None of the stores sell the first party controllers cause mircosoft apparently does not ship them anymore.

Umm.... when talking about online play, we have the Dreamcast to thank for that. I mean Phantasy Star Online, the entire 2K sports series, Unreal and other games... it definitely made online play popular ESPECIALLY Phantasy Star Online.

Yeah, but remember that Xbox was basically the Dreamcast and that Xbox Live's interface redefined online gaming

That's right. Every console has contributed to the next gen. You can find a little bit of the old qualities of consoles in our next gen consoles of today, but they're just updated and improved.
