  • what makes a game "mainstream"?

i was talking to someone yesterday and he said that the only mainstream thing that he does is that he is going to buy mw2....what makes it mainstream...because ppl buy the hell out of them or because they are advertised and shoved down your throat everywhere you look...what is the difference between a great game and a mainstream game...mainstream is that they sell alot of copies but so does a great game so what is the difference....although i didnt think that halo was that good(go ahead hit me with all the angry comments you can)but it sold like hotcakes...why? plz give your opinions.....this nugget brought to you by the blister

if this is what you mean by it then wouldnt that make everything that you buy or do mainstream cus it says that if it has anything to do with big companies and corporate entities then it is mainstream then just about everygame that comes out is mainstream...btw im diggin the machette video

Mainstream is something that appeals to a very broad crowd. You usually hear the term only applied to games like CoD, Madden etc but it's also applicable to the majority of Wii titles.

then why is it looked upon as a bad thing to do something mainstream(aside from emo)....because CoD and madden are good game titles.....but im with you on the wii.....but why not just call them good games?

Well with that statement I can kind of tell you're young maybe 16ish? But really nothing is wrong with liking mainstream media in the least. It's just some people get smug because they like something that isn't very popular or as popular. It's just human nature to feel that way sometimes. "I found this awesome thing before anyone else has!", but nothing is wrong with liking something mainstream or more atypical stuff weather it be movies, music, games or whatever.

Games that are simple/basic or mindless enough to appeal to a mainstream audience.

Halo, CoD, Wii Sports, Guitar Hero, Madden

no dude you got me wrong man...im not griping cus i like games that are considered mainstream....and btw im 22.....i wish i was 16 again lol......but i was just asking for opinions(yours is good)but i dont really play CoD and madden just example...im still addicted to D2Lod(FTW)i just wanted to see what makes one that way and what doesnt.....but i do like gears of war.....thank you for commenting tho
