I updated my 2 year old 60gig fat PS3 to 3.01 a ways back and now when I went to watch a bluray movie, it'll run for about 10 minutes and freeze, then throw and error 80029906. Also, it'll freeze when playing a PS3 game. And I'm not alone.

Skim over the comments in that Playstation blog posting. Hundreds, if not thousands, are currently effected by this. It seems to be mostly older models with the problem.
Sony support claims its hardware, but logic would conclude that firmware is to blame since most of the replies state they didn't have a problem till they upgraded the firmware. Maybe it's both, who knows.
Some people are dropping $150 bucks on repairs by sending it to Sony, tossing consoles in the trash or considering moving to a different console.
Sony is staying tight lipped as usual. Apparently, Sony is fixing bricked consoles for free in Australia. But I'm still waiting for the next firmware update so hopefully I'll have a fully functional PS3 again. I'd rather not have to send in or replace my current console if it's just a software bug. I can eat the 15 bucks I payed to rent a few blurays I can't watch, but 150 for repairs or 300 for a new slim model would really sour my liking towards Sony.
I did look around and didn't see any reporting on this on the Gamepro site. So I figured I'd make someone at GP, and it's users aware.
And before it starts, you fanboys can put a sock in it. Every one of the current gen consoles have had issues. RRoD, flying Wii remotes and now a botched firmware update. Don't get me started on Vista.....
